Mumbai: The City That Exhausted Me, Fed Me, and Somehow Made Me Love It

I do not think Mumbai is a city you fall in love with immediately. At least, I did not. The first time I came here, I was overwhelmed before I had even left the station. There were people everywhere. Endless noise. Cars honking. Crowded footpaths. Humidity sticking to my skin. Everyone seemed to be moving quickly, as if they already knew exactly where they were going. And I remember thinking — how does anyone live here?

But then Mumbai did what it does best. It slowly revealed itself. Not through grand monuments or perfect moments, but through tiny details that kept catching me off guard. A man selling cutting chai at 7 in the morning while half the city rushed past him. The old Art Deco buildings standing beside glass skyscrapers. The sea appearing unexpectedly at the end of a crowded lane. The woman in a bright saree reading a book quietly on a local train.

Mumbai is full of these little contrasts. One minute you are standing outside luxury stores in Bandra, and the next you are eating a vada pav on the roadside for twenty rupees.

One evening, I walked along Marine Drive after a long day. The sky was grey, the sea was rough, and people were sitting all along the promenade doing absolutely nothing. Couples. Families. College students. Office workers. Nobody seemed in a hurry anymore.

For a city that moves so fast, Mumbai has strange pockets of stillness. I think that is what surprised me the most. The calm inside the chaos. I found it at Marine Drive. I found it in old Irani cafés where waiters still call you “boss.” I found it in Bandra lanes covered in graffiti and bougainvillea. I found it in the way strangers somehow always help each other — whether it is giving directions, making space in a train, or telling you where to find the best pav bhaji.

One afternoon, I got completely lost in Colaba. I had no real plan. I wandered through bookshops, roadside stalls, tiny cafés, and old buildings with crumbling walls and beautiful balconies. At some point, I ended up sitting near the Gateway of India with a paper cup of chai, watching ferries move across the water. Tourists were taking photos, pigeons were flying everywhere, and the Taj Hotel stood in the background looking exactly like it does in postcards.

It should have felt touristy. But it did not. It just felt like Mumbai. Messy, crowded, cinematic, alive. That is the thing about this city. It is not beautiful in the obvious way. It is beautiful in the way people keep showing up for it. In the way it somehow makes space for everyone. Dreamers, artists, office workers, actors, students, shopkeepers, people who have lived here forever, and people who arrived yesterday with two bags and a plan.

Mumbai can be exhausting. It can test your patience. It can make you sweat, get stuck in traffic, and question your life choices. But it can also make you feel like anything is possible.

And maybe that is why people stay. Not because Mumbai is easy. But because once it gets under your skin, it is very hard to leave behind.

Well, here’s a ‘for tourist’s’ summed up version:
